If you love organized style in closets, cast your vote for Get It Together LA!  in the Los Angeles Organizing Awards.   We have been nominated for the fifth year in a row for Best Closet Design in the premiere event for the organizing industry.

Voting takes place online through December 24.  Over twenty awards will be presented on January 29, 2011 at the Sheraton Universal.  All awards are chosen by the public by voting at www.napola.org.  Get It together LA! would love your support.

Our custom designs match the personality of our clients.  Contemporary or traditional, wood or melamine we provide couture a place to call home.

When you think about making a change to your closet or dressing area, bring the elements from the adjoining bath or bedroom into the design.  For large spaces consider adding a chandelier.  Don’t forget to include your favorite colors and add personal elements like pictures or works of art.

Locked, velvet lined, jewelry drawers are a must to make a night on the town with your best diamonds easy to find to make the opening curtain.  Garment rods for tomorrow’s wardrobe are a necessary convenience.  And don’t forget the laundry hamper to keep clutter off the floor in the evening.

Your new closet can be award-winning and still meet your budget with proper planning.  Please cast your vote for Get It Together LA! as the Best Closet Design Firm for 2011.

Often a new space is recreated by making modifications to existing structures.  This project is a prime example of how to make an elegant home for your wardrobe without having to start from scratch.  The master closet was redesigned by Chris McKenry and organized by our Get It Together LA! team.

An obtrusive full length tailor’s mirror was removed from the island allowing the feeling of more space.  Then, the white-painted surface of the island was replaced with a stained Burch top to match the woodwork in the adjoining hall.

More hanging space was created on the back wall and a lovely framed glass cabinet was added for extra storage and display.  The existing handbag cabinet was updated with the same matching framed glass doors giving a beautiful display of Prada, Rodo, St. John’s, Tod’s and Louis Vuitton evening and handbags.

And there is never enough room for designer footwear.  Not true now.  We made room for Micheal Kors, Moschino, Oscar de la Renta and Salvatore Ferragmo by adding shelves perpendicular to the existing shoe display.

The chandelier and wall coverings were by Preston Lee Design.  Now this dressing room has form, function and finesse.  Organizing does just make life easy, it makes it spectacular.

Since organizing my first closet, I have always encouraged using uniform hangers.    Using the same style of hanger allows your wardrobe to hang at the same height.  Once clothes are sorted by “like with like” it is much easier to find the outfit you need each morning.

But you may be reluctant to make the hanger change because you do not want to have to re-hang the clean clothes upon returning from the cleaners.  Ask if they would use your hangers instead of the wire ones.  More and more I like to use the Huggable Hangers from Joy Mangano.  They are super thin, attractive, and the flocking keeps items from slipping off the hanger.

Many dry cleaners would be happy to save the cost of wire hangers and the ultra thin ones are easy for them to use.  Just offer to take the same amount of hangers into your cleaners with your dirty clothes.  If your dry cleaner is not able to accomodate, then try to return the wire hangers as you re-hang your clothes.  This will allow them to recycle, which is always a good thing to do.

Remember, it is Get Organized Month.  So see where clutter is keeping you from getting organized and tackle it one project at a time.

cropped-closetA reach in closet will have more room if all the wall space is utilized.  Home office closets may have several uses.  Extra coats, office supplies, family photographs, and shredder just don’t work in a closet with one rod and shelf.

Once you identify your needs, a good closet designer and make your “prime real estate” work for you.  Cubbies for paper supplies, adjustable shelves get things in sight.  If over-sized times are stored, have a “home” designed for easy access.  For example, extra table leafs for the dining room table are now easy to reach.

Even if your system is melamine, choose a finish you like.  There are many options other than white.  Fun containers, like these form The Container Store,  will finish off your project and make working at home more fun and productive.

This closet was designed by Get It Together LA!

Knoxville does not have a Container Store, but that does not mean the city lacks the hottest organizing products.  Robin and Travis Carbaugh have owned SpaceMakers The Get Organzied Store since 1997.  Located in the shopping meca of West Knoxville’s Turkey Creek, SpaceMakers is across from Walmart.

On my visit this week, Robin and Travis walked me through the newly remodeled showroom.  Besides featuring numerous organizing products for spacemakers-web2all areas of the home and office, SpaceMakers offers custom design services for closets, garages, office, and pantries.  They offer both custom melamine and wood veneer systems from basic to designs featuring crown molding and unique drawer inserts.  They also offer Do-It-Yourself products for those inspired by HGTV, also located in Knoxville.

Their website is expanding and online shopping is available for many items.  If you are in East Tennessee, SpaceMakers a must stop for your holiday organizing needs and Get Organized Month projects in January.  Besides, organizing a garage is much more fun with snow falling than during hot and humid days of summer!
